Passbook generates virtual coupons received by emails, websites or mobile applications. The user has only to “add” and the Pass is automatically added in his virtual wallet (Apple Passbook, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, PassWallet, Microsoft Wallet…).
The storekeeper or the store does not necessarily need to be equipped with a barcode scanners, which it could be expensive, indeed, the customers have already the tools that they need to make the transaction: their smartphone and the company’s app.
In some cases, places like cafes, restaurants, check-in counters of airlines companies, concert halls and some retail stores have already these scanners.
The storekeeper simply scans the coupon that appears in the Iphone screen and the transaction occurs. It is as simple as that. Most payments are made through prepaid cards and debit cards in order that customers receive an update of their virtual card after that the payment is made.
iBeacon, which is another initiative from Apple, offers even more possibilities. The iBeacons are used to send targeted and geolocated notifications to buyers, visitors, walkers who are close the store, mall or museum in order to maximize the efficacy of the message.
The iBeacons can then send informations about items or works close that the customers can search. They also allow to make a payment at the point of sale. The customers don’t need to get out their payment card or loyalty card from their wallet. This could be a possible NFC competitor if this solution is adopted in mass.
The US retailers like Best Buy, Crate & Barrel, JCPenney, Old Navy, Sports Authority, Target and others are ready to test iBeacons, which are optimized for the Iphones via the Made for Iphone (MFI) program of Apple and Android via Google, and also work with others partners.
